Michigan Wolverines

The School

Founded in 1817, 20 years before Michigan became a state. It was one of the first public universities in the nation. The school moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837. But wouldn't play its first season of football for another 42 years.

The Mascot

Michigan was known as the Wolverine state even though no wolverines had ever been spotted in the state. Fur traders were said to have traded in wolverine pelts in Michigan. Ohioans often called Michiganders ornery wolverines during the Toledo war.
