The School
In 1825, the university opened as a seminary called "Indiana State Seminary." In 1828, it became "Indiana College." In 1838, "Indiana University." But it wouldn't be until 1887 when Indiana played its first football game.
The Mascot
A great deal of debate surrounds the origin of the nickname Hoosier, but it predates the university and is probably more akin to a regional nickname than a mascot. Northerners are Yankees. Indiana residents are Hoosiers.
