Wisconsin Badgers

The School

The school was established in Wisconsin’s state constitution of 1848. Initially funded by a federal land grant, in 1849 the inaugural class had seventeen students. To maintain enrollments during the Civil War, the UW allowed women to enroll in its teaching college. 24 years after the war ended, Wisconsin played their first football game.

The Mascot

The story goes, lead miners in the 1820s traveled to Wisconsin and to stay safe and warm in the winter had to live like badgers in tunnels. Wisconsin became the Badger State in honor of this tradition and the badger was adopted as the school mascot. It is the only school in NCAA Division 1 with the badger mascot.
