The School
In 1851, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature and Governor Alexander Ramsey charter the University of Minnesota, seven years before Minnesota becomes a state. It would be another 31 years before the school fields a football team.
The Mascot
Minnesota was dubbed the "Gopher State" in 1857 after a satirical cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published. In the 1930's, radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term "Golden Gophers" in reference to the team's all-gold attire on the field.
