Cliff on Iowa
Iowa needs 2 more games to have a 6-6 season. And I don’t know what else to say about Iowa. They are so inconsistent this year. Their offense finally started scoring points last weekend. If their offense shows up this weekend, they have a chance. Kirk Ferentz is starting to remind me a lot of Lloyd Carr. Carr was a great coach at Michigan, but he really stayed on a year, or two, longer than he should have. Mac, what do you see in this game?
Mac on Iowa
I’m not sure what to say about Iowa at this point other than they need to have a serious look in the mirror moment. I don’t know how it’s possible that Spencer Petras has 1200 yards passing on the season. That must’ve all come from the Northwestern game. The only hope they have at maintaining the possibility of bowl eligibility is that Purdue’s defense is really not good. Maybe that helps them pull off an upset here, because if Iowa wins, it won’t be because their offense suddenly got it together and scored a bunch of points. It’ll actually probably be because of a balanced effort on offense and defense with defense leading the way. Maybe setting up some short fields and kicking a ton field goals.
Cliff on Purdue
Purdue needs this game to stay up with Illinois, so when they play Illinois next week, they have a chance to take the lead in the West division.
Jeff Brohm needs this game to improve to a winning record at Purdue, he’s currently straight up 26-26, although he’s 3-1 against Iowa.
Mac, what do you see for this game?
Mac on Purdue
It’s like I said, Purdue’s defense is not good. They have a solid offense that can score a lot but when you can’t stop anybody, it doesn’t matter. I don’t think for a second that this game is going to turn into a shootout, but Purdue wins if they just play mistake free football. Which they don’t. They have 9 interceptions and 6 lost fumbles so far this season. They need to clean that up. Their game against Wisconsin was so indicative of that. It was a game where Purdue led in total yards, time of possession, total first downs…but then also led in turnovers with 3. Without those, Purdue is bowl eligible and looking a lot better in terms of the big ten title picture.
