The second ever known professional football player, Donelly was paid $250 for a game played on November 19, 1892 by the Allegheny Athletic Association against Washington & Jefferson Presidents football team. He was then hired by the Allegheny Athletic Association as player-coach making him the first man to coach a known professional team. Served as the University of Iowa’s head coach for a single season in 1893 (3-4).
